A few years ago, Merge VR founder Franklin Lyons was in a university lab working with scientists on top-secret futuristic virtual reality technology. But it was his prototype of a soft virtual reality headset made with drugstore lenses and a hacked-up yoga block that most captured everyone’s imagination.
“This little foam thing that I was carrying around with me was getting all the attention because here we are pouring our hearts and soul and blood into these projects that nobody’s ever going to see because it’s just too far out there,” Lyons recalled, showing off the prototype at MergeVR’s Geekdom headquarters. “There will be a small sub-sub-segment of the population that actually gets to use those tools (being developed in the university lab) but not for a long, long time. This (the virtual reality headset) is so applicable for everybody.”
