With the recent popularity of AI image generators and large language models that are trained with authors’ works from the Internet, copyright law has been the subject of recent controversy. But what is a copyright, and how does it protect creators? In this workshop, Matt Fagan of Goodwin Procter will provide an introduction to copyright, including when copyrights are infringed and when copying is legal. We’ll address the right to copy and create derivative works, when copying goes too far, and how to protect your software, music, images, and literary works. We’ll also consider how far you can go in using other people’s works.
This workshop will take place on February 14, and we all know what that means: horror! This workshop will illustrate copyright law through numerous examples drawn from classic horror movies and TV shows. We’ll examine derivative works with Tales from the Crypt and Creepshow, look at legitimate use of someone else’s work in the classic Hammer Horror movies, consider authors’ rights in Friday the 13th, and review one terrifying parody of Mary Poppins.
